my new standard ATX power supply will not fit!
HP and Dell Designs their cases and power supplies in such a way that there is no power switch (naughty naughty!).
your job, should you decide to accept it, is to modify the case (CASE MOD) to receive the new power supply.
this will mean using a nibbling tool.
making a hole in your case for the new power supply (PSU)
completely remove the old power supply. cables and all.
when using the nibbling tool, make sure you position your hands and the tool in such a way that you can retrieve the pieces easily, preferably on the floor. use a newspaper if you have to. the pieces will be sharp.
take the new power supply and attempt to "install" it into the case and see where the out-jutting parts bump up agaionst the case metal. use a pencil to mark up the case to show you where to nibble the case out. remove the power supply, and get to work.
avoid getting metal bits on the motherboard or on any circuitboard (they will short things out).
Dell models from dates 1998-2002
These models use power supplies that are not plug-compatible with ATX, though it may look like it.
see Dell and Micron Power Supplies.

Power Supplies
for stability, over-rate your power supply's recommended rating by 80W. meaning, take the maximum of the motherboard wattage and the recommended wattage of your video card and add 80W to it. There are system load calculators out there.
80 Plus power supplies, especially these eries silver and gold, are very efficient and well made. 5 year warranty, and you will save money on power bills.
