This and 2+ GB of RAM, and at least a 256MB video card (for Aero) should make a decent minimum Vista box (Vista has a number of new background processes that are always running). Dell dual-quad-core workstation with 4 monitors and max 64GB ram (runs Red Hat though)
up to 4 slots all in a 1U or smaller enlosed flat box. includes a power supply - up to 55W/card. laptop versions support 1 PCI-E x1 or the pro version supports a long x16 card.
Iomega 32328 750MB IDE/ATAPI/PATA Interface ZIP Drive, available from newegg $129+8
internal ATAPI/IDE/PATA zip drive. lowest/only density and *only* internal zip drive available. I think it's still compatible with all older ZIP media. I've heard it's still used by accounting, but I think they used to use the 100MB drive. if the drive starts repeatedly clicking forever no matter the media, your drive is dead (click of death). repeated clicks are a sign of bad media or bad drive. the more you use the media the more wear. probably still uses 3.5" bay.
CORSAIR Flash Voyager 16GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model CMFUSB2.0-16GB - Retail, available at newegg $45
usb stick. The 16 GB Flash Voyager features Corsair's proprietary all-rubber housing boasting unheard-of durability. In many third party reviews, the Flash Voyager has been shown laundered, baked, frozen, boiled, dropped, even run over by an SUV, and it continues to work! (such abuse is not suggested though). Includes TrueCrypt security software, which enables AES-256-bit encryption, hidden and password protected partitions. Beyond 32GB, Flash drives will have to move to exFAT.
startech.com IDE2CFINT COMPACTFLASH TO IDE ADAPTER, available at antonline $12+10

ATA133 and SATA II Cables
18" ATA133 Cable, 3-Connectors, available from newegg $2-5
they have 36" cable too if you really need it, but the standard says nothing longer than 18" (otherwise you get bluescreens, lockups, crashes, etc). flat cables are better but harder to route.
SATA II cables, available from newegg $2-5
these have metal latches, so they are less likely to break. choose your color, length, & angle (straight or 90°). SATA II cables should work fine with SATA 150. just so you know, max. SATA cable length is 1 meter (39") according to standard (ensures data integrity).
1TB Hard Disks
hitachi drives run at a max 60°C(140°F). generally a hitachi runs at 40°C(104°F).
HITACHI Ultrastar A7K1000 HUA721010KLA330 (0A35772) 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM, available at newegg $140
this is for the enterprise. 1.2M hours MTBF under lower duty-cycle environment. generates a lot of heat due to the extra platters. one person recommended a high CFM fan over the drive, or a water cooling unit. 32MB cache makes it wonderfully fast. hot, fast, loud, espensive. cost per GB is higher than that of a 500GB drive currently (May 23, 2007). may not be a good drive for your RAID box because of the heat (don't want heat failure). Specs say it will operate at up to 60°C(140°F) but that is probably Absolute Maximum — the point at which it dies. it runs 35°C idle. price is dropping. takes a while to spin up. 4TB models by 2010. 8.2ms avg seek time. 4.17ms avg latency.
HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 HDS721010KLA330 (0A35155) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM, available at newegg $130-$30mailinrebate

Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST31000340NS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM, available at newegg $230

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM, available at newegg $180+9
4.17ms avg latency. 8.9ms avg seek time.
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM, available at newegg $160
loud. 32MB cache. 5.6ms avg latency. 8.9ms avg seek time. WD support is only for 30 days.
Western Digital Caviar GP WD10EACS 1TB 5400 to 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM, available at newegg $129
quiet. fast! 16MB cache. nobody said anything about hot, but it probably is. 5.6ms avg latency. 8.9ms avg seek time. WD support is only for 30 days. 1 out of 318 users said "didn't realize you needed a wd 'secure connect' cable and not able to find on newegg. Couldn't use the sata cables that came with the motherboard." everybody else said it was SATA and for the most part worked fine, but slower than most 1TB drives.
1.5TB Drives
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (bare drive) - OEM, available at newegg $190
32MB cache. 4.16ms avg latency. 36°C(96.8°F) under load (copy 460GB), standby 31°C.
Hard Drive Eraser/Wiping Boxes
degaussers are used when the media is no longer useable, or if you try a wipe and it has bad sectors. Now the DoD recommends destruction or degaussing of the disk (which destroys it) for every situation. some say the DoD has never had any other policy.
Wiebetech Drive eRazer and Drive eRazer Pro (Pro preferred) $100-223
you don't get a one-device-does-all solution like you do with the usb-to-ide/esata/sata drive cables. there are 3 different models of each, though there should only be 2 of each from the description it looks like 2 are redundant (2.5" PATA). What they could have done is put the SATA on one side and the PATA on the other side. Pro has an NIST secure drive erase mode that ignores errors. the regular version stops on drive errors and only does a zero-wipe (in the same time it takes for my software to complete). no computer required, just press a button. works on Mac drives.
DiskJockey Pro $499
disk-to-disk copies, disk copy verification, standalong HD mode. 2 different kinds of erase: quick 1-pass and a NSA 3-pass. sata, 2.5"ide, 3.5"ide.

High Speed Wipe Operation@3GB/min, Sanitize Multiple Drives Simultaneously, Partitions and Formats Drives, Sanitize Different Drive Models and Sizes, DCO and HPA (hidden areas), Multiple User Defined Settings, Password Protected Settings, Log Information, Upgradeable, eSATA. optional HW like notebook adapters and drive coolers & SW like format FAT32.
ibas data erasure products

Audio
Roland SH-201 Analog-Modeling Synthesizer (Professional Audio), available at sweetwater $596
makes just about any sound you would like. fine for knob-tweakers. USB 2.0 port. invisible D-beam you can wave your hands over! VSTi software included. knobs are positioned left-to-right. 2 oscillators. high quality delay, reverb. arpeggiator. external audio input for morphing sound: you supply a headset or mic.
Plusdeck2c PC Cassette Deck, Tape To MP3, available from cuberguys $99 (sometimes on sale for $108 or $140)
tape-to-MP3. requires a 9-pin serial port (not all new PC's have one), line/audio in, and line/audio out jack. has pass-thru headphone & mic jacks. this thing must have long cables that feed through the inside of your PC and out one of the back plates. autoreverses & plays the other side. overall, a bit of a pain to set up. If your PC doesn't have a serial port, you will need one of the USB1.1-to-serial9pin adapters (they are USB-bus-powered). Since this plugs into your line in jack, you are going to have to fiddle with 4 volume settings (the volume coming out to your speaker adjustable in your computer's settings, the volume kbob on your speakers, and the volume knob on the unit, the line in volume which must be adjusted to your loudest tape to avoid clipping and other distortion, which you will probably have plugged into the headphone jack of the unit). the line in adjustment can be tricky, so if the manual says anything, follow it. This one avoids the Vista media constrictor, if you have a vista-certified sound card.
ION AUDIO Tape2PC USB 2.0 Cassette Deck, available from nextag $160
tape-to-MP3. don't know if this thing autoreverses, but it's USB 2.0 and a whole lot easier to hook up - 2 cables probably, 1 AC power cable and 1 USB 2.0. comes with Audacity (audio editor that outputs MP3) and can port your songs to your itunes account for you. USB 2.0 avoids the other deck's volume & cable mess. CD supposed to be for Mac & PC, but files on it are only for PC - go to their web site for Mac files. "Important Mac note - before you start, you need to go into your sound playback file and choose: USB audio codec - this is the opposite of what they say in the booklet."(reviewer) you must press "finish" when it's done and "track" between songs. filters some of the scratchy sound a little. great sound quality. If you have Vista you will have to download a different version of the software. Note: I do not know if this is vista-certified.
Video
convert old VHS tapes to digital format. included software lets you burn to DVD or watch on your PSP, iPod or laptop. usb2. line input for camcorder tapes. Note: I do not know if this is Vista-certified.
